How to launch a private label product

From the first idea to a product with your brand on the shelf: what to prepare and where most launches go wrong.

7 min read

Private label lets you sell products under your own brand without building a factory. The manufacturer already makes the product; you choose the specification, packaging and price position.

1. Start with the market, not the factory

Decide who will buy the product, at what retail price and why they will choose it over others. The target price defines the factory price you can afford after duties, transport and your margin.

2. Write a clear brief

Describe the product, materials or formula, sizes, packaging, required certificates and the markets where you will sell. Add photos or links to products you like. The clearer the brief, the fewer sample rounds you need.

3. Compare factories and samples

Ask several factories for samples made to the same brief. Compare quality, price, minimum order and lead time, and keep the approved sample as the reference for production.

4. Packaging and labels

Labels must include the information your market requires: product name, ingredients or materials, instructions, warnings, origin, batch and importer details. Check this before printing, not after.

5. Pilot batch

A small first run shows how the product sells and reveals problems with packaging or quality before you invest in volume.

6. Scale up

When the product works, agree regular orders, fixed prices for a period and a production schedule. Inspect every batch before shipment.

Nectus manages all of these steps with you and the factory.
